XX Corps - Brief History


A brief history of XX Corps:
10 October 1943 - Constituted
01 August 1944 - Became part of the 3rd Army in France
10 August 1944 - Secured the bridgehead at Le Mans and liberated Angers
15 � 19 August 1944 - Five-day battle for Chartres
23 August 1944 - Seized a bridgehead over the Aunay River and liberated Fontainebleau
27 August 1944 - Liberated Chateau-Thierry and captured a bridgehead across the Marne River
29 August 1944 - Liberation of Reims
31 August 1944 - Liberation of Verdun and seizure of a bridgehead over the Meuse River
10 September 1944 - Bridgehead established in Arnaville
12 September 1944 - U.S. 90th Infantry Division cleared Thionville
16 September 1944 - Elements of the 7th Armored Division broke out of the Arnaville bridgehead and advanced toward the river Seille
20 September 1944 - Captured Pournoy-la-Cheive, also the 7th Armored Division left the corps and was replaced by the 6th Armored Division
24 September 1944 - Corps goes into defensive positions due to lack of supplies
02 - 30 October 1944 - Reaching the outskirts of Maizieres-les-Metz finally taken on 30 October
Battle Credits: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns
01 March 1946 - Deactivated in Germany
